Introduction
As a Catholic School in the Holy Cross Tradition, St. Edward
High School requires all students to participate in our Community Service
Program. Rooted in the Gospel call to "love your neighbor”, and our Holy Cross
mission to "hope for a world where justice and love prevail,” our Community
Service Program requires a minimum
hourly service requirement per academic year. Additionally, all students must
complete a service log to document the service completed, and to reflect on
their service experience.

"Service" Defined
While the term "service” can be used to define a variety of
activities, in order to receive credit, a "service” activity should meet the
following basic guidelines:
- Your service has taken you beyond the bounds of
family and friendship into the greater community. Helping family members does
not qualify as community service. (E.g. washing the dishes, cleaning your room,
shoveling grandma’s driveway, etc.)
- Your service could be defined as one of the
"Corporal Works of Mrcy” OR should be an expression of one of the "Charisms of
Holy Cross”
For your reference:
| Corporal Works of Mercy | Charisms of Holy Cross | | - Feed the Hungry | - Filled with a spirit of hospitality | | - Give drink to the thirsty | - Committed to building positive relationships | | - Clothe the Naked | - Enlivened by zeal and tempered with humility | | - Shelter the Homeless | - Bringing daily hope in the Cross of Christ | | - Visit the sick | - Trusting always in Divine Providence | | - Visit the imprisoned |
| | - Bury the dead |
- Your service has challenged you beyond your
comfort zone.
- For current sophomores, juniors, and seniors:
service completed over the past summer can
be used to complete the Community Service Program.
**If you are unsure
if a particular activity would qualify as "service”, please contact
Ms. White (or
Mr. Mackin, or Mr. Haggerty, depending on your class year)
before you complete
the activity, and she/he will clarify.**
Service Logs
Once a student has completed a service activity, he should
complete a service log (available in the Campus Ministry Office, your religion
class, or online on the Community Service page of the St. Edward High School
website). The student needs to provide the date the service was completed, the
location, and a contact person (pastor, volunteer coordinator, etc.) though NO
SIGNATURE IS REQUIRED, as well as a brief description of the service activity
that was completed. There are also several reflection questions. If a student fails to complete the
reflection questions, he will NOT receive credit for completion of the service. CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD THE SERVICE LOG.
Grading
Students will be able to check their progress online through
NetClassroom, and their progress (current as of the end of the 1st
semester grading period) will also appear on their 1st semester
report card. While the Community Service
Program "grade” will NOT appear on the student’s official transcript, or affect
his GPA, completion of the Community Service Program is a graduation
requirement for all St. Edward High School students. Beginning with the 2012-2013 school year, if, at the end of the
academic year, a student has yet to complete the Community Service Program for
the current school year, he will be required
to complete any missing hours or service logs prior to advancing to the next
grade level.
Note: Students who have not completed their community
service requirement for the 2011 – 2012 school year will need to make up those
hours this school year. Those students will be notified, by homeroom mail,
within the first few weeks of the school year and that information will also be
noted on his NetClassoom account.
