When Blessed Basil Moreau formed the Congregation of Holy Cross 175 years ago, he took the example of the Holy Family as his guide. The mission of the Congregation was to be lived out by a group of women and men working together as a community; as a family.

At St. Edward High School, we too strive to embrace and carry out the Holy Cross vision of our founder, and seek to do so as one community, and as one family. Our theme for the 2012 – 2013 school year, "Brothers in Unity,” reflects that calling. Taken from a line found in the Constitutions of the Congregation of Holy Cross, "Brothers in Unity” reflects our intentional focus on maintaining a welcoming, supportive and vibrant community, rooted in meaningful relationships. All members of our community; students, faculty, administrators, parents, and alumni are all valuable members of this Holy Cross family, and all are united in our common Holy Cross Heritage.

In the opening few weeks of the school year, signs of this community were on in display in many unique ways; from Night at the Nest, where our incoming freshman and their families were welcomed into the St. Ed’s community, to the opening football game at Lakewood Stadium, where countless students filled the students section to cheer on their fellow Eagles, both those competing on the field, and those performing in the marching band at halftime. On the final weekend of the summer, over 70 upper-class students attended a day-long retreat in their preparation to serve as "Moreau Mentors” for the incoming Class of 2016, and that same very same weekend, another group of 25 seniors attended a retreat to prepare to serve our school community as extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion. And finally, on the opening Friday of the school year, the entire school assembled in the school gymnasium for an opening liturgy; united together in prayers of thanksgiving for a restful summer, and in prayers for the coming school year.

The Holy Cross Constitutions state, "We shall have most to share with others by dwelling together as brothers in unity” and that is where the most important element of this year’s theme lies; we are called together as a community in order to serve those around us. In just a few weeks the first group of sophomores will embark on their sophomore service retreat, branching out across greater Cleveland to serve those in need of a hot meal and a week’s worth of groceries, and plans are already underway for our annual Thanksgiving Food Drive. Finally, as we look ahead to the spring, work has already begun on "Eagles on Foot,” our 5k race to benefit Basil Moreau School in Port-Au-Prince, Haiti. In our commitment to our Holy Cross Mission, we place at the forefront, Christ’s call to "Love our Neighbor,” both our neighbors next door, and those around the world.
