Mission Program Overview
Liturgy
Campus Ministry works to provide students with
a genuine spiritual dimension to their experience at St. Edward High School.
Students have the opportunity to take an active role in liturgies throughout
the school year. Priests from many different parishes and Diocesan offices
are invited to celebrate mass and share time with the St. Edward community.
The Liturgical Choir provides the musical accompaniment for liturgies and
services, accompaniment that includes a full range of instruments.
A typical yearly mass schedule might
look like this:
August - Eucharistic Minister Family Mass
September - Opening School Liturgy
September - Sophomore Family Mass
December - Immaculate Conception Liturgy
December - Christmas Prayer Service
January - Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration
February - Ash Wednesday Service
April - Holy Week Services
April - Eagles on Foot Liturgy
April - Junior Family Mass
May - Baccalaureate

Freshman Retreat (General Info)
For this introductory retreat, students examine their talents,
obstacles, and relationships with people in their lives. The retreat is
a first chance
to
set goals and
plan positively for four successful years at St. Edward High School. Contact
Mr. Flament for more info.
Sophomore Retreat (General
Info)
For this retreat
experience, students examine justice issues in the community through education,
service, reflection and action. This retreat is a service
retreat following the gospel message of working for peace and justice in
our world. The retreat includes a day of preparation on a specific social
justice
issue that is affecting the surrounding area (hunger, homelessness, education,
healthcare and etc.) Students venture into the community in groups of 4-7
and perform community service at community organization connected with the
retreat "issue." At
the end of the day students meet for a prayer service and to discuss the
events of the day. The following day students examine their experiences and
develop
action steps they can take to work for positive change in regards to the
community challenges they encountered. Contact Mr.
Chrosniak for
more info.
Kairos (Junior-Senior)

Kairos is a Greek word
meaning “God’s time”. The
retreat is a four day, three night experience where students have
the chance to get
to know themselves, their fellow students, and God on a deeper level.
This retreat is student-run and staffed by St. Edward faculty. The KAIROS
experience is a unique and life-changing opportunity. Contact Mr.
Reiling for more info. Wilderness
Retreats
Click
here for detailed info about all retreats, including Wilderness,
for '06-'07
Wilderness Retreats are three to seven day faith
strengthening retreats though the experience of Christian community
and spiritual awakening in nature. There are two types of Wilderness
Retreats:
The "Best of Both Worlds" Wilderness Retreats
take place in northeast Ohio at places like Nelson's Ledges,
Hinckley, Cedar Hills,
Inspiration
Hills, and area park systems. These retreats are weekends only
(no classes missed) and include daytime hiking of 1 to 2 miles
per day. No packs are needed.
The "Escape to the Mountains" Retreats
are given on location in Allegheny, Monongahela, and Daniel Boone
National Forests. Some
take place on weekends, some during class days (miss
2 to 3 days of class at most). Included are three days of hiking
outdoors, nights
in tents, hikes with and without backpacks. Contact Mr.
Cavoli for more info.
Community Service
Mission Program
The objective of the Mission Program is to provide each student with a structured
opportunity
to
develop Christ-like values through direct service to individuals in and around
their
community.
Each session of the MISSION program is worth 1/8 credit, for a total
of 1.0 credits upon graduation. Students will be required to complete all
sessions prior to
graduation.
Service is people-oriented. Students must take part in experiences
where they interact with other people on a regular basis. While service
opportunities which require little or no interaction can make a valuable
impact they are
not
appropriate for this program.
The length of a service "visit" is determined
by the student in collaboration with the agency they help. Students need to
have
a clear understanding of what
will be a "meaningful amount of time" for them to serve the
individuals in need.
For each MISSION session
the student will compose a service journal. Contact Mr.
Chrosniak for
more info. Students can download mission booklets here. Revised June

Appalachia
In its sixth year, the Appalachia
Work Camp is a week spent among low-income people in the mountainous
Appalachian
region of the U.S. Students, faculty andstaff work together on home
repair and construction projects. Students also connect with Appalachia
culture and rural poverty. In the past the destination was Virginia,
West Virginia or Kentucky. The past two years have been spent at a
site in Eastern Kentucky. For information, please contact Mr.
Reiling at 216.221.3776
Ext. 560.
Big Brothers
In the Big Brothers program, St. Edward
students spend one afternoon per week mentoring young students at Lakewood
area
elementary schools. As "Bigs," SEHS students make a real
difference in the lives of young people and form lasting relationships
while also
having a great time!
Community Meal
St. Edward High School sponsors a monthly
community meal organized and run by faculty and students. The meals,
which take place
on the fourth Wednesday of each month, serve hundreds of community members.
Students interested in volunteering should see Mr.
Reiling or Mr. Bosley. Volunteers
are needed during the school year on Tuesday from 3 - 5:30 PM and Wednesday
from 3 - 5:30 PM and 5:30 PM - 7: 30 PM.
Food Drives
We sponsor two annual food drives, one in the fall
and one in the spring. Students can fulfill part of their Mission requirements
by participating in one or both of the food drives. Contact Mr.
Chrosniak for more info.
Eagles on Foot
EAGLES ON FOOT - A new St.
Edward Spring Tradition! The Annual Eagles on Foot 5K Run and 1 Mile Walk
raises
over
$3,500
for the Alzheimer's Association. More than 360 runners and walkers participate.
Contact Mr. Chrosniak for more info.
Habitat for Humanity
The St. Edward Habitat for Humanity Chapter consistently
works to provide volunteers for Cleveland Habitat for Humanity and make themselves
more aware of the realities families face in trying to attain adequate housing
in our city and our world. St. Edward students volunteer with Habitat for
Humanity on a monthly basis throughout the city of Cleveland. Please contact
Mr. Chrosniak in the Office
of Campus Ministry and Community Service for more information about Habitat
for Humanity!
SADD
Originally, the mission of the SADD chapter was
to help young people say "No" to drinking and driving. Today, the
mission has expanded. Students have told us that positive peer pressure, role
models and other strategies can help them say "No" to more than drinking
and driving. And that is why SADD has become a peer leadership organization
dedicated to preventing destructive decisions, particularly underage drinking,
other drug use, impaired driving, teen violence and teen depression and suicide.
Service Club
Service Club is an organization of students interested
who work to better their community by offering assistance to others by participating
in service projects and leading school-wide efforts. Contact Mr.
Wanner for
more info.
Social
Justice
SECHOR
The St. Edward Council on Human Relations seeks to improve
understanding between various school groups and among larger portions of the
community. Contact Mr. Reiling or Mrs.
Hruby for more info.
Homelessness Experience
Each year many St. Edward students
take part in the Homeless Experience, where they spend an evening living
in a homeless shelter, eating
in soup
kitchens
and experiencing a day with little to do in downtown Cleveland. Students
interested in the Homeless Experience should see Mr.
Reiling.
