Guidance Department Overview

The school guidance counselors are prepared to help each student make the most effective adjustment to high school, and throughout their years at St. Edward.  Counseling help is given in matters of academic, vocational and personal concern.  The Guidance Center is prepared to aid the student in preparing his course of study for all four years.

Students are encouraged to make an appointment to see their counselor when help is needed.

Resources

The Guidance Center and the school library have many resources to assist in the college selection process.  College guidebooks, catalogs, videos, software, viewbooks and other information about both college selection and financial aid opportunities are available in each location.

College Guidance

The counselors responsible for college guidance oversee and organize the official college program and conduct parent programs, and group and individual college guidance sessions for students.

The College guidance process unofficially begins when a student enrolls.  The student's assigned counselor sees to it that each student takes an appropriate college preparatory program.  Students meet with their guidance counselors each year to review their progress and to plan the next year's courses.   All counselors are aware of the graduation requirements as well as college entrance requirements.

All juniors take the PSAT in October.  The results of this test are available in about 8 weeks and are useful in identifying possible areas of testing strength and weakness, and in predicting how students will perform on the SAT I.  This test is also used to select National Merit Semifinalists from the juniors who score the highest. Students receive information about this test in their English classes.

During the second half of junior year, students take the ACT and SAT.  Group guidance for juniors takes place in January before the test.   Booklets containing registration materials and sample tests, complete with testing tips, are available in the Guidance Center.

During the second half of junior year, students meet with the counselor who will work with them on college matters.   Group guidance sessions are conducted throughout the year in various classes to familiarize students with the St. Edward system of college guidance, and to introduce factors that should influence college selection.  On two Saturday mornings in February, a program is held to introduce parents of juniors to St. Edward College Guidance procedures. This program is for all parents of juniors and explains the school's system, policies, and procedures to be followed in the college selection process. Following this information session, parents, with their son, schedule an appointment with a counselor to share information and explore college options.

Each senior is required to submit at least one college application.
