STRENGTH & COMMUNITY: MIKEY GEORGE MAKES HIS TRIUMPHANT RETURN TO ST. ED'S
Last Friday afternoon, students joined together for the first pep rally of the year to kick off all the fall sports teams' new seasons. To make things competitive and fun, students from each class year battled against each other in a glow-in-the-dark dodgeball tournament, with the senior class reigning triumphant. This wasn't the only moment of triumph that afternoon.
On behalf of the St. Ed's community, the senior class granted the Sledge, a symbol of school spirit and strength, to Mikey George who came onstage to surprise his fellow Edsmen. Donning "Mikey's Miracle" t-shirts, the crowd of Edsmen cheered upon seeing their fellow Eagle return to the Nest for the first time since May. Michael (Mikey) George '21 was recently diagnosed with leukemia and after spending over 14 weeks in the Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital, Mikey was released from the hospital and returned home in good spirits in August. Despite still undergoing chemo, Mikey continues to be a courageous example of St. Edward strength. With the support and prayers from the St. Edward community, Mikey has made a miraculous recovery.
Following Mikey's surprise return, senior class president Dan Conway '19 invited the St. Ed's community to bow their heads to say a prayer, written by Theology teacher Mr. Owen Williams '13, in honor of Mikey:
"Lord, we gather together, and we thank you for all of the ways in which you have blessed our St. Edward community. You call us to follow you, as we are; fill us with your spirit as we go forth from this place today; give us the courage to respond to your call; help us to always be mindful of your unconditionally loving presence in our lives, especially in times of trial. We are grateful, Lord, for the wonderful miracle that is the healing of our brother, Mikey George, and we ask that you continue to be with him and his family. We look to them as an example of what it means to completely surrender ourselves to your will, to trust always in Divine Providence; to see the hope, the daily resurrections that are present in each of our lives. Finally, Lord, we ask that you be with each of our fall sports teams and our Marching Eagles as they compete and perform this season. Keep them safe, and help them to perform at their absolute best, using the gifts that you have blessed them with. May they continue to represent our St. Edward community well, so that they--and all of us--might be an encounter with you for all."
Please continue to keep Mikey in your prayers as he undergoes further rounds of treatment on his road to recovery.
