SECOND EDSMAN NAMED YOUTH CHALLENGE VOLUNTEER OF THE WEEK

Congratulations to Jack Fox '20 (photographed back row, third from right) who is the second Edsman this year to be named "Volunteer of the Week" by Youth Challenge, the leading organization in Northeast Ohio where young people with physical disabilities can interact, play sports and socially grow with teen volunteers. Jack began volunteering with Youth Challenge this past summer and has helped consistently with their football program this fall. Jack has helped assist with all football practices to prepare for Youth Challenge's first-ever "Woo-per Bowl" held last Thursday. "This program truly wouldn't have been the same without Jack," says Sarah Perez-Stable, Director of Programs & Volunteer Services for Youth Challenge. "He brings a ton of energy and enthusiasm to the program every week and even helped Elias (one of the participants) and the Green Bulbasaurs clinch the win over the Terrifying Tangerine Turbos."

"I was initially looking to gain more service hours when I heard about Youth Challenge from my sister and I talked to a couple of friends who do it and they encouraged me to join. It has been such a great experience because I have built so many great relationships with people. I have made friendships with other volunteers, staff members, and also the participants," says Jack. "I've really enjoyed helping others, learning about the kids I am partnered up with, and helping them enjoy everyday activities that we take for granted." In addition to helping with the football program, Jack has led several Youth Challenge activities including swimming at Clague Park and golf in North Olmsted. "Jack brings his love of sports, friendly smile, sense of humor, and passion for helping others to every program," says Sarah. "He's become a good friend to many participants in the process. We're very lucky to have him and look forward to him bringing even more fun to the Youth Challenge gang."

"It is important to serve your community and help others. It's so rewarding to be part of a community like Youth Challenge," says Jack. Reflecting on our school's theme, "Go and Do Likewise," Jack says it has encouraged him and his fellow Edsmen to push themselves in how they can best serve others and to hopefully inspire others to do the same. "I like to think of our theme as a pay it forward kind of thing," says Jack. "I think it is important that Edsmen live out this theme's meaning because serving our community is such an important thing that we can all do together."
