ST. ED'S EXPANDS RIGOROUS CURRICULUM OFFERINGS WITH IB MATH AND LATIN SL COURSES

Looking ahead to the 2023-2024 school year, the IB course offerings at St. Edward High School will be expanding, with the addition of the new IB Latin SL course and encouraging students who'd once consider taking AP Statistics to challenge themselves in the IB Mathematics SL: Applications and Interpretation course. With other new IB courses still to be announced, these two rigorous courses offer students the ability to connect academics to their own personal interests while learning to adopt differing perspectives and see how concepts can be applied to the real world.

"The most valuable aspect of the IB Latin course is the authentic Latin literature students will get to analyze and discuss in class, while providing a radically different perspective on how to see and understand the world," says Latin teacher Peter Knittel.

"I enjoy teaching the IB Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation course because of the focus on realistic problem-solving," says Math teacher Zach Mertens '10. "Each topic includes links to related careers, such as business, finance, physics, chemistry, and architecture and there's a lot of emphasis on interpreting solutions and justifying accuracy, which are helpful skills in any career field." The IB Math SL course will not only prepare students for collegiate math courses, but will teach them how to apply these concepts to the real world and real-life questions and how math correlates to their interests.

"I'm excited to begin teaching IB Math to help students address the inevitable question that comes up in all math classes, 'Why are we learning this?' I am striving to help students broaden their understanding of how math surrounds us in everything we do," adds Math teacher Lisa D'Angelo. "It is my hope that students will not only notice the math around them, but will also feel encouraged and empowered to seek it out in all of their experiences."
