Languages like French, Latin, and Spanish aren’t just subjects—they’re gateways to a global education.
The Language Acquisition Department embraces an international perspective, integrating IB principles with Holy Cross values to create a learning experience that’s about much more than grammar and vocabulary.
St. Edward focuses on cultural empathy and global understanding, knowing that mastering a language is about more than communication—it's about bridging cultural gaps and building meaningful connections. By appreciating cultural differences and similarities, students gain a deeper understanding of themselves and others, making language a powerful tool for connecting across borders.
At St. Edward, courses are designed to foster understanding and humanize different cultures. Teachers emphasize relationship-building through communication, helping students enhance their vocabulary and grammar while also developing problem-solving skills and creativity. This well-rounded approach prepares them for academic success and global citizenship.
The curriculum goes beyond the classroom with Edsmen participating in real-life experiences like international trips, visits to films and art exhibits, dining experiences, and local and national competitions. Guest speakers also enrich their learning journey.
St. Edward students are eligible to earn the Ohio Seal of Biliteracy. The Seal of Biliteracy is a recognition awarded to students who have attained high proficiency in English Language Arts and one or more World Languages upon graduation. This award is issued by the State of Ohio. The seal certifies attainment of biliteracy for students and is a statement of accomplishment that further supports a students’ preparedness for their college or career and for engagement as a global citizen.
Classroom Highlight
A favorite student project is scripting and performing a short scene in their secondary language. These creative, out-of-the-box activities not only help students memorize vocabulary but also encourage them to speak the language and use it to convey meaning—all while having a lot of fun!
