What is IB?

International Baccalaureate is a globally-recognized educational framework that offers a unique classroom approach.

International Baccalaureate is both an instructional approach and a curriculum design that empowers students to:

  • Think critically
  • Explore connections between different subjects
  • Understand and appreciate differing perspectives
  • Form a strong desire to better the world

Official IB coursework begins in grade 11, however, St. Edward's expert faculty masterfully weaves the IB instructional philosophy throughout every subject and grade level. The goal of this approach is to prepare students not just for exams or college, but for life—helping them become thoughtful, compassionate, and responsible servant leaders who will make the world a better place.

5 Things You Should Know About IB at St. Edward:

1. IB influences both our teaching methods and the content we deliver. The framework guides how teachers interact with students, assess their progress, and make curricular decisions. Every Edsman benefits from the IB approach, as it is integrated into every classroom experience.

2. As Edsmen progress to their junior year, they can choose from more than 20 advanced IB classes. These classes emphasize real-world experiences, challenging them to take charge of their learning, become more culturally aware, solve complex problems, and understand the impact of their actions both locally and globally. Impressively, over 70% of upperclassmen enroll in at least one IB Diploma course.

3. Approximately 100 juniors and seniors pursue the prestigious IB Diploma; enrolling exclusively in IB courses and participating in specialized service, research, and writing projects.

4. Colleges and Universities around the world frequently award credit for IB Diploma classes. Post-secondary credit is guaranteed at all public universities in Ohio!

5. Several members of the St. Edward faculty serve as IB examiners, global curriculum designers, and presenters at IB conferences—extending their influence and expertise worldwide.
