Color Guard Instructor (Part-Time)

Position Description: The St. Edward Marching Eagles seek an experienced color guard instructor for the 2026 marching band season (May through November or December). The Marching Eagles are a corps-style competitive marching band. They are consistent OMEA state finalists, earning superior ratings at the state level for the last 10 years. They also compete in the BOA and LMBA circuits most seasons. Rehearsal schedule: Mondays and Thursdays, 3:45–5:45 p.m., and Tuesdays, 6–9 p.m.

Goal: St. Edward High School, an International Baccalaureate World School, encourages students to become active, compassionate, and lifelong learners with international awareness.

Responsibilities:

  • Conducts color guard clinics and tryouts in May or June.
  • Instructs the color guard in basic movement and technique.
  • Writes and teaches the routine for the football show.
  • Effectively teaches the routine for the competitive show.
  • Assists with flag and uniform design for the competitive show.
  • Ensures that the equipment necessary for performance throughout the season is maintained, transported, and stored properly.
  • Notifies the band director of any needed repairs or purchases related to the color guard.
  • Rehearses two days a week throughout the summer.
  • Attends all band camp rehearsals in the summer.
  • Attends all adjudicated performances.
  • Works with the color guard for 90% of the regular season for full ensemble rehearsals.
  • Experience and a proven ability to choreograph competition shows are strongly preferred.
  • DCI or WGI/OIPA Winterguard experience is preferred, but not required.

Requirements:

  • Exhibits professional conduct at all times.
  • Completes VIRTUS training and update modules, as necessary.
  • Chaperones performances as needed.
  • Keeps a working binder of all source material.
  • Ensures the safety of students under this position’s instruction, within reason.
  • Meets briefly with the band director before and after each rehearsal for planning purposes.
  • Coordinates with the band director to complete any necessary additional tasks.
  • Dedication and communication are paramount.
