Heri Ramadhani’s time at St. Edward has been marked by an incredible evolution, as he stepped out of his shell and into a world of opportunities. Originally from Tanzania and now a resident of East Cleveland, Heri made St. Edward High School his home, diving into sports, clubs, international trips, and the challenging IB Diploma program. Once a shy freshman, he has grown into a confident and ambitious learner with an inspiring story to share! We sat down with Heri to hear more.

The best way to describe Heri Ramadhani? He’s everywhere. Whether it’s on the field, on stage, or in the pages of the yearbook, this Edsman has made the most of every opportunity at St. Edward—and then some. Born in Tanzania, Heri moved to the Cleveland area with his family at the age of six, bringing with him a drive and energy that has set him apart ever since.

When it came time to choose a high school, Heri knew exactly what he was looking for: “I wanted to go somewhere competitive—somewhere where colleges would notice you.” And competitive he’s been. What started with a love for soccer as a freshman quickly grew into a whirlwind of activities: swimming, track, theatre, yearbook, Flight Magazine, chess club, French Club, international travel, choir, Model United Nations, and Student Ambassadors. Heri doesn’t just participate—he dives in headfirst, making his mark in every corner of campus life.

“St. Ed’s has really pushed me out of my bubble,” Heri said. “Freshman year, I was really shy. I felt like I couldn't do as much as other people. But I’ve grown, learned to trust myself, and built confidence.”

One of the ways Heri gained self-confidence is through performing on stage, which “pulls you out of being yourself,” Heri said. Following in the footsteps of his older brother—a theatre major at the University of Mount Union—Heri got involved in acting and most recently performed in the Edwardian Players’ production of Arsenic and Old Lace. In this play, Heri had the special opportunity to act alongside his younger brother, Byamungu, who is a sophomore.

Beyond theatre, some of Heri’s most memorable experiences at St. Edward have come from international trips with Mr. Perrins. One standout was a life-changing journey to El Salvador, where Heri had the opportunity to help teach English to local students. “We visited a school for children who had been abandoned or were living in dangerous circumstances,” Heri explained. “The kids lived together in a gated community that provided both a home and an education—it was an unforgettable experience.”

Heri also traveled twice to Ghana, where he spent time with the Brothers of Holy Cross and visited Holy Cross schools. During these trips, he lived alongside students, attended classes with them, and experienced their deeply rooted faith-based way of life. Heri shared, “Their boarding school schedule was intense! They had Mass every morning at 6 a.m., and the school day stretched a full 12 hours. However, the school still reminded me of St. Ed’s in how they strive to inspire their students.”

As part of his college preparation, Heri is pursuing the prestigious International Baccalaureate Diploma—a challenge he has embraced despite its demands. “The IB program has been a lot,” Heri admitted. “It’s like a balancing act. At one point, I wanted to drop it, but [Academic Dean and IB Coordinator] Mr. Kuhar helped me stick with it. He watches over me, keeps me on task, and steps in when I overbook myself. He really keeps me in check.”

For Heri, the hands-on learning approach of IB classes has been a highlight. “I really enjoy the projects that our IB classes offer,” he shared. “We learn by doing, and I love that I’m never stuck in my seat.” This dynamic style of learning has pushed Heri to think critically, openly share insights, and approach problems from different angles.

Next year, Heri hopes to attend Case Western Reserve University to study nursing. “The medical field is full of fulfilling work,” Heri said. “I want to do something meaningful and impactful.” With Heri’s drive to explore and learn, he is on track to do just that.
