The highest honor bestowed upon an alumnus, this award recognizes exceptional professional achievement, a deep commitment to the ideals of a Holy Cross education, and meaningful service to St. Edward High School and the greater community.

A devoted educator, visionary leader, and lifelong Eagle, Br. Robert E. Lavelle, C.S.C. ’58 left a lasting impact on the St. Edward community through his commitment to the school’s mission and the values of a Holy Cross education. A member of the Class of 1958, Br. Robert entered the juniorate program shortly after graduation, beginning a vocation rooted in faith, service, and education. While his ministry spanned decades—including transformational leadership at Gilmour Academy—St. Edward remained central to his life. He passed away in January 2026 at the age of 85, leaving a legacy that continues to guide the community he loved.
Br. Robert served on the St. Edward Board of Trustees from 1982 until his passing, offering decades of insight and thoughtful leadership. His tenure reflected deep institutional knowledge and a steady commitment to guiding the school through growth and change. He was known for balancing respect for tradition with a clear vision for the future, helping strengthen academic and co-curricular programs, support key initiatives, and keep focus on forming young men of character, competence, and compassion.
Over the years, Br. Robert’s contributions were recognized in meaningful ways. In 2018, St. Edward awarded him the St. André Bessette, C.S.C. Award for his servant leadership, and in 2022, the Martin Luther King Jr. Award for his advocacy for social justice and inclusive leadership. These honors reflected both his impact on the school and his broader commitment to dignity, equity, and Holy Cross education.
His legacy is defined by humility, steady leadership, and a deep sense of purpose. Whether in Board discussions or during pivotal moments in the school’s history, he modeled integrity and thoughtful guidance. Students, faculty, trustees, and alumni alike were shaped by his example. Beyond his formal roles, he remained a proud Eagle whose connection to St. Edward never wavered.
St. Edward honors Br. Robert’s memory and celebrates a life devoted to faith, service, and leadership—an example that continues to inspire Edsmen to lead with humility, serve with purpose, and live the values of the Holy Cross tradition.
