The most prestigious honor awarded by St. Edward High School, the Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes extraordinary service to the school over multiple decades, and a commitment to excellence that leaves a lasting legacy.

John F. O’Brien '54 of Rocky River is a highly respected business leader and philanthropist with deep roots in the St. Edward High School community.
Born and raised in St. Christopher Parish, he was the only son of Ann Feighan O’Brien and Francis O’Brien, growing up alongside his sisters Anne, Colleen, Kathy, and Patricia. He often reflects on the profound influence of his father and maternal grandfather, John Feighan, whose example shaped his lifelong sense of integrity, service, and devotion to family.
A 1954 graduate of St. Edward, he continued his education at Georgetown University. His connection to Georgetown remained strong throughout his life, including service on the university’s Board of Governors. In 1999, he received the John Carroll Award—one of Georgetown’s highest honors—recognizing alumni whose achievements and service reflect the institution’s ideals.
Following graduation, he returned to Cleveland and began a distinguished career in the securities industry with McDonald & Company. Over time, he earned a reputation for deep market insight, strong client relationships, and principled decision-making.
Since 1993, he has served on the St. Edward Board of Trustees, offering steady guidance in support of the school’s mission. His dedication also includes 35 years of consecutive annual giving and membership in the Br. John William Donoghue, C.S.C. Legacy Society. He and his family also established the John F. O'Brien '54 Family Endowed Scholarship. In recognition of his generosity and lifetime achievement, John was named Alumnus of the Year in 1995 and received the St. Joseph Benefactor Award in 2003.
His commitment to service extends beyond St. Edward. He has served as a trustee of the John P. Murphy Foundation, supporting education, the arts, community services, and healthcare across Cleveland. He also serves on the Board of Directors for Stella Maris, which provides addiction treatment, mental health services, and supportive care to individuals and families in need.
He was married to his beloved wife, Marilyn, until her passing in 2022. Together, they built a life grounded in faith and family. He is the proud father of Gina, Victoria, Julie, John, Kathy, Chris, Karen, and Bill.
Through decades of service, generosity, and quiet leadership, his impact continues to be felt across St. Edward and the broader community.
