For more than six decades, Tom Glasenapp ’66 has been a familiar voice and a dedicated presence in the life of St. Edward High School.
A 1966 graduate of St. Edward, Glasenapp competed in debate and tennis before earning a debate scholarship to Wheeling College, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in English in 1970. He returned to St. Edward that same year to begin his 46-year career on the faculty, teaching in the English Department while continuing his own education. In 1976, he earned a master’s degree in English from Cleveland State University. Glasenapp retired from St. Edward in 2016.
Over the years, Glasenapp served St. Edward in nearly every way imaginable. He coached tennis, golf, and debate; served as sports information director; moderated the school newspaper and yearbook; and led the Development Office from 1981 to 1985. A devoted keeper of St. Edward history, he also authored Positive Values: 50 Years of Excellence, chronicling the people, achievements, and traditions that shaped the school.
His service has earned two of St. Edward’s highest honors: the Bronze Eagle Award in 1994 and Alumnus of the Year in 2016.
But for generations of Edsmen and their families, Glasenapp may be best known simply by the sound of his voice. Since 1971, he has served as public address announcer for St. Edward home varsity football and basketball games, adding Gold Team wrestling in 1975, and baseball from 2013-2015. His voice has provided the soundtrack to victories, championships, and unforgettable moments for countless student-athletes, parents, alumni and fans.
That voice also became familiar to Cleveland sports fans. Glasenapp served as public address announcer for the Cleveland Browns from 1979 to 1995 and the Cleveland Indians from 1989 to 1993 at Cleveland Municipal Stadium. From the thrills of the “Kardiac Kids” to the heartbreak of “Red Right 88” and “The Drive,” he called some of the city’s most unforgettable moments and had the distinction of announcing the final Municipal Stadium games for both franchises.
Glasenapp and his wife, Karen, have been married for 49 years. They are the parents of Brian ’96, Mark ’98, Michael ’00, and Kelly, a 2004 graduate of St. Joseph Academy, and the proud grandparents of seven.
