Through annual and endowed scholarships, St. Edward continues to break down financial barriers and open doors for students to grow in faith, excellence, relationships, and servant leadership. The event reflected that shared purpose—linking generations through generosity, gratitude, and the enduring mission of Holy Cross education.
Student speaker Owen Metzger ’26 embodied that mission as he shared his story. A recipient of the Joseph and Mary Holland Endowed Scholarship, established by their sons Dan ’54, Tom ’57, and Mike ’62, Owen thanked Tom and his wife Mary, who were in attendance.
Following in his brother’s footsteps (Fitz ’20), Owen joined the rugby team as a freshman. Multiple injuries—including one that temporarily left him in a wheelchair—tested him, but never his community.
“My coaches checked in, teammates had my back, and people carried my bags, grabbed my books, even warmed my lunch for me,” he shared. “The brotherhood didn’t stop when I was out of uniform—it showed up when I needed it most.”
That challenge became a turning point. Today, Owen is House Everett’s senior leader, president of the Beekeeping Club, student and Eucharistic minister, National Honor Society member, student ambassador, and still a proud rugby player.
“Every day, Edsmen are thankful for the generosity of scholarship donors,” Owen said in closing. “Because of you, we’re set up for success—now and in the future.”
Opening Doors
Today, more than 160 scholarships—endowed by alumni, parents, grandparents, and friends—ensure that a St. Edward education remains within reach for families from every background.
The Class of 2030 will be the first to benefit from a few new and expanded opportunities. Legacy Scholarships will be awarded to all sons and grandsons of alumni, while Holy Cross Scholarships celebrate applicants who embody the school's four pillars. And those who join one of the school’s music ensembles will now receive an automatic award.
“We want every young man who is meant to be here to have that opportunity,” says Kim Kuchta, Vice President of Enrollment and Strategy. “Our goal is to walk with families every step of the way, making sure cost is never the reason a student can’t experience what makes St. Edward so special.”
A Tradition of Generosity
At St. Edward, financial accessibility isn’t just a priority — it’s a promise. Every scholarship reflects someone’s belief in the potential of the next generation of Edsmen.
“Behind every scholarship is a person who wanted to give another young man the chance to discover his gifts and become a leader,” shares Executive Development Director Traci Zahn.
And that spirit of generosity will continue to lift the Class of 2030 and the many classes to come.
