Expanded Scholarships—Greater Opportunity

Posted

October 22, 2025

Laughter and conversation filled the room as scholarship supporters met the Edsmen whose journeys they’ve helped shape. What began as the annual Scholarship Appreciation Luncheon became something more—a living expression of the Holy Cross belief that every young man deserves access to opportunity, regardless of means.

Through annual and endowed scholarships, St. Edward continues to break down financial barriers and open doors for students to grow in faith, excellence, relationships, and servant leadership. The event reflected that shared purpose—linking generations through generosity, gratitude, and the enduring mission of Holy Cross education.

Student speaker Owen Metzger ’26 embodied that mission as he shared his story. A recipient of the Joseph and Mary Holland Endowed Scholarship, established by their sons Dan ’54, Tom ’57, and Mike ’62, Owen thanked Tom and his wife Mary, who were in attendance.

Following in his brother’s footsteps (Fitz ’20), Owen joined the rugby team as a freshman. Multiple injuries—including one that temporarily left him in a wheelchair—tested him, but never his community.

“My coaches checked in, teammates had my back, and people carried my bags, grabbed my books, even warmed my lunch for me,” he shared. “The brotherhood didn’t stop when I was out of uniform—it showed up when I needed it most.”

That challenge became a turning point. Today, Owen is House Everett’s senior leader, president of the Beekeeping Club, student and Eucharistic minister, National Honor Society member, student ambassador, and still a proud rugby player.

“Every day, Edsmen are thankful for the generosity of scholarship donors,” Owen said in closing. “Because of you, we’re set up for success—now and in the future.”

Opening Doors

Today, more than 160 scholarships—endowed by alumni, parents, grandparents, and friends—ensure that a St. Edward education remains within reach for families from every background.

The Class of 2030 will be the first to benefit from a few new and expanded opportunities. Legacy Scholarships will be awarded to all sons and grandsons of alumni, while Holy Cross Scholarships celebrate applicants who embody the school's four pillars. And those who join one of the school’s music ensembles will now receive an automatic award.

“We want every young man who is meant to be here to have that opportunity,” says Kim Kuchta, Vice President of Enrollment and Strategy. “Our goal is to walk with families every step of the way, making sure cost is never the reason a student can’t experience what makes St. Edward so special.”

A Tradition of Generosity

At St. Edward, financial accessibility isn’t just a priority — it’s a promise. Every scholarship reflects someone’s belief in the potential of the next generation of Edsmen.

“Behind every scholarship is a person who wanted to give another young man the chance to discover his gifts and become a leader,” shares Executive Development Director Traci Zahn.

And that spirit of generosity will continue to lift the Class of 2030 and the many classes to come.

LEGACY SCHOLARSHIPS

New this year for the Class of 2030, the Legacy Scholarship celebrates the tradition of brotherhood shared by generations of Edsmen. These awards are granted to applicants whose father, stepfather, grandfather, or step-grandfather (living or deceased) is a St. Edward graduate.

ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIPS

Endowed scholarships—made possible by generous supporters—help ensure that cost is never a barrier to receiving a St. Edward education. Recipients are expected to set an example of integrity, responsibility, and school spirit. These scholarships are awarded based on the following criteria:

  • Service to their school, parish, or community
  • Strong record of academic achievement

HOLY CROSS SCHOLARSHIPS

New this year for the Class of 2030, Holy Cross Scholarships recognize applicants who embody the four pillars of a St. Edward education: faith, excellence, relationships, and servant leadership.

  • Faith: Candidates demonstrate a deep and active faith life, a commitment to growing spiritually, and a desire to live with purpose and integrity.
  • Excellence: Candidates pursue academic and personal excellence with curiosity and determination, striving to use their talents to the fullest.
  • Relationships: Candidates understand the power of relationships, valuing authentic connection, building community, and embracing brotherhood.
  • Servant Leadership: Candidates lead by example—with a focus on serving others before themselves.

MUSIC SCHOLARSHIPS

New this year, St. Edward offers $1,500 annually renewable music scholarships to every member of the Class of 2030 who commits to participation in one of the school’s major ensembles: Marching Band (fall) and Symphonic Band (winter and spring), Orchestra, or Choir. To receive the scholarship, students complete an online application and take part in a brief musical assessment, which is used only to help directors place each musician in the ensemble and part where they will succeed.

The Music Scholarship requires a separate application. Click here to learn more and apply.

MERIT SCHOLARSHIPS

Students who score in the top tenth percentile nationally on the High School Placement Test automatically qualify for a tuition reduction of up to $6,000.
