Get the Edge is the St. Edward High School Summer Enrichment Program

for boys entering the 7th and 8th grades.  The three-week camp offers

the best of academics and recreation and is designed to help young men

considering St. Edward High School expand their intellectual curiosity in

an engaging, team-oriented environment.

The Get the Edge curriculum is focused on the three C's of 21st century

learning - critical thinking, creativity and collaboration. Participants will

have the opportunity to explore six subjects in fun and exciting ways that

will keep them engaged during the summer months.  Students will have

the opportunity to make course requests based on their interests, and they

will participate in six of the following courses:

MATH

Through computer-based learning and hands-on lessons, campers will take a real-world approach to math applications.  The math course will also help campers prepare for upcoming high school admissions exams.

CREATIVE WRITING

Campers will examine various creative writing styles, forms, and methods and produce their own collection of poetry and fiction modeled after master writers.

SCIENCE

Taking a hands-on, collaborative approach, campers will explore principles of biology, physics and chemistry through daily experiments in our state-of-the-art labs.

WORLD POLITICS

With the Br. Bennet Nettleton, C.S.C. History Museum as their classroom, campers will participate in a 20th century social studies simulation that will deepen their understanding of modern international relations and current events.

ROBOTICS

Campers will examine cutting edge robotic technology used by large scale companies such as the Cleveland Clinic, NASA, and Ford.  Campers will design, build, and program NXT Lego robots in a small group collaborative environment.

ENGINEERING DESIGN

Campers will explore the world of computer aided design using software used by many professional engineers from companies such as John Deere, Whirlpool, Sony and Lenovo. Campers will experiment with everyday objects and recreate them in a virtual space so that they can make modifications and improvements.

ENTREPRENEURSHIP

Campers will have the opportunity to identify problems, discover solutions, and develop new ideas that will impact their own Get the Edge experience - giving them an engaging overview of the design cycle and the entrepreneurial mindset.

MYTHS AND WARRIORS OF THE WORLD

Campers will explore the religious and military traditions of ancient cultures from around the world.  We will investigate Egyptians, Greeks, Vikings, Samurai, Celts, and more.

FILM

Campers will get an introductory look at filmmaking while working in teams to write, shoot and edit their own short film in St. Ed's new film production suite.

MUSIC

Campers will have the opportunity to hone their music skills with St. Ed's Performing Arts Department.

Ideal for campers who are currently musicians, and those who are hoping to become musicians.

COMPUTER PROGRAMMING

In this introductory programming course, campers will learn about the key concepts of programming while designing their own platform game (similar to the old Super Mario Bros. games) using the easy-to-learn Game Maker. Campers will develop design and problem solving skills, while also gaining a foundation in programming knowledge.

GAME DESIGN

What makes a good game?  Through analysis of classic and contemporary board games, campers will collaboratively develop a theory of "good games," including a rubric to evaluate the final group project: improving a certain well-known real estate game.  In the process, students will gain introductory-level practical experience with probability, game theory, and communication skills.

LEADERSHIP

In this course, campers will learn how their unique talents can make them better team members.  Activities will include games that challenge students’ critical thinking abilities, communication skills and ability to work as a part of a team.

***

In addition, campers will enjoy recreational activities, including sports like basketball, dodgeball, ultimate frisbee, soccer, and more.

For the student who is considering St. Edward as his high school choice, Get the Edge is an unparalleled opportunity to get to know our faculty, explore our campus, and make friends with future classmates.

By maximizing the combination of academics and recreation, the St. Edward enrichment program will help you Get the Edge this summer through an invaluable experience that builds the qualities that we expect of every St. Edward student: scholarship, leadership, compassion, innovation, excellence and brotherhood.
