ST. ED'S FLIGHT MAGAZINE RANKS TOP 5 IN OHIO HIGH SCHOOL PUBLICATIONS

Congratulations to last year's staff of St. Ed's Flight Magazine, including Editor-in-Chief John Kutney '22, Patrick Cawley '21, Marty Dubecky '21, and Michael Gibson '23, who worked on Flight Magazine Volume 66, which just received an "Excellent" rating from the National Council of Teachers of English through the 2020 NCTE Recognizing Excellence in Art and Literary Magazines (REALM) program. This ranking places Flight Magazine Vol. 66 in the 2020 Top 5 student literary magazines in the state of Ohio. REALM is designed to encourage all schools to develop literary magazines that celebrate the art and craft of writing. St. Ed's annual Flight Magazine features a range of students' works from poetry and prose to artwork and photography. "Leading Flight to the Top 5 magazines in the state feels amazing. This is the first time something I've been a part of has gone so far," says John. "My favorite part of Flight Vol. 66 was the professionalism, from the pieces by our extremely talented student writers, artists, and photographers to the overall layout that me, my staff and Mr. Urban created." Now leading this year's Flight staff (photographed above) including John, Patrick, Marty, Jackson Miller '22, Matthew Quinn '23, and Ben Zangas '23, English teacher and Flight moderator Mark Urban continues to foster opportunities for students to express themselves artistically. "Art is an essential component of any healthy culture. It is vital for students to express themselves through their artistic and writing talent, particularly during a pandemic that has challenged and reshaped what is important to us all," says Mr. Urban. "Although the Flight Volume 66 staff was virtual last spring, they were still essential to the production process for the magazine. Their hard work prior to school moving to virtual instruction enabled us to produce and print an exceptional magazine full of our students' many talents while staying close to our production calendar goals. They are currently in production on what will be another great volume for this year and their work as curators of artistic expression is vital, noble, and selfless."
