Best of the Week 2022-2023: Excellence in College Prep

ST. ED'S EXCELS AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL IN ACADEMICS, ARTS & ATHLETICS

This past week has been a celebration of excellence across St. Ed's academics, athletics and performing arts. St. Ed's Mock Trial team made history, winning their first State championship at the 2023 Ohio Mock Trial State Competition over the weekend. St. Ed's will represent Ohio at the National High School Mock Trial Competition in Arkansas this May. "This year started with over 200 teams of which 24 qualified for states. After five incredibly competitive trials over three days the Eagles were the last ones standing," says Social Studies Department Chair and Mock Trial Moderator Suzanne Fairfield. "The growth of these young men since we received the case in September was incredible to witness!! In addition to winning the state championship, individuals were recognized for the outstanding performances!! The genuine demonstration of brotherhood was inspiring."

The St. Edward Latin Eagles, Knights of the Tiber, attended their State Latin Convention in Columbus and received eight state titles in individual events, earned by five Edsmen state champions, and ten state runners-up in eight individual events. St. Ed's 21-member Knights of the Tiber earned 80 awards in total with the first-ever induction of a St. Edward senior into the Ohio Senior Classical League. Congratulations to Ty Wiggenhorn '23 on this esteemed accomplishment and for being elected as Editor for the OSCL executive board.

St. Ed's Symphonic Band also made history over the weekend, receiving a unanimous superior rating from all four judges at the OMEA Large Group Assessment. This is the first time St. Ed's Symphonic Band has scored so high across the board, which is equivalent to a championship win, with the largest Symphonic Band in recent St. Ed's history. "Over the past 10 years, the Symphonic Band has only received a superior rating at contest twice before, but never in such a definitive fashion," says Angelo Kortyka '98. "We have built quite a robust program and thank you to all of those who have supported the Symphonic Band and their endeavors. I cannot tell you all how much it means to me and to the students."

St. Ed's reigning Wrestling Eagles champions won their 44th OHSAA Individual Teams State Championship for their 2023 season over the weekend as well. This was the first time all fourteen wrestlers qualified for states, with Ethan Timar '25 and Karson Brown '26 winning as individual champions and nine other Eagles placing. In February, the St. Edward wrestlers also defended their title, winning the 2023 OHSWCA Dual State Championship.

Congratulations to all our Edsmen for striving toward excellence, achieving historical accomplishments and for being an inspiration to the entire St. Ed's community.
