Best of the Week 2022-2023: Teaching to the Future

ST. ED'S HONORS AND RECOGNIZES THE LEGACY OF TWO FUNDAMENTAL COMMUNITY LEADERS

This week, St. Edward High School recognized the dedicated work and selfless commitment of two important community members, Greg Urbas and Don Murphy, honoring them with their very own plaques in the St. Ed's spaces that have meant the most to them.

Greg Urbas was the St. Edward High School Head Wrestling Coach from 1990 – 2018. His teams won 24 state championships and four national championships. Greg’s selfless commitment to the student-athletes of St. Edward is unmatched. Greg continues to serve our Edsmen as a tutor, mentor and freshman football coach who “coaches them up” every day to be the best they can be. The late Howard Ferguson said, “They broke the mold when they made Greg Urbas!”

Students, parents, alumni, colleagues and friends of St. Edward have used the words "selfless, caring, dedicated, humble and mentor" to describe Coach Urbas. His impact on the lives of St. Edward students far exceeds his excellence in teaching math, coaching wrestling or coaching football, as he first taught Edsmen to be good people. Coach Urbas is revered as a leader and is the model of Holy Cross Servant Leadership. We are forever grateful for his genuine love and passion for the St. Edward Community.

St. Edward is honored to recognize Greg, and his unselfish commitment to St. Ed’s by naming the iconic wrestling room the “Greg Urbas Wrestling Room.” Thank you, Coach, for your loyal dedication to the St. Edward Community.

Don Murphy was a committed and loyal member of the St. Edward Community for over 40 years serving as Coach, Athletic Director and Vice President of Finance. “Murf” as he is affectionately known, lived and breathed everything St. Ed’s. Always working late into the night and throughout every weekend, Don exhibited an unselfish commitment to helping families navigate the financial aid process so their son(s) could attend St. Ed’s. “Dedicated, loyal and conscientious are the words I think of when someone mentions Don Murphy. He is a man you can count on at all times,” said Bill Leonard ’68, St. Edward Trustee and Chair of the Finance Committee.

St. Edward is honored to recognize Don, and his unselfish commitment to St. Ed’s with a plaque outside of the Finance Office. On behalf of a grateful community, thank you, Don!
